PVC Decking Vs. Composite Decking: What’s Right For You?

PVC decking and composite decking are both highly sought after decking materials. Which one is right for you?

When it comes to low maintenance decking options, two kinds of decking often come up: PVC decking and wood-plastic composite decking. Both options are known for their low cleaning needs and lack of painting or staining requirements, as well as resisting splintering and rotting that comes with traditional wood options. However, there are some key differences between the two that may make one more appealing to you than the other. Here are the biggest differences between PVC decking and composite decking.

What Looks More Like Wood?

High-performance composite decking tends to have realistic wood-grain embossing as well as a more natural color, but this also comes at the cost of fading much easier than PVC decking. PVC decking has made some pretty big strides in looking closer to wood these days, but nonetheless, it still offers a much more uniform and synthetic look. Some people prefer that synthetic appearance for a more modern, clean look, while others opt for composite materials if they want their deck to look more traditional and rustic.

Which Resists Weather Better?

For anyone with a deck, weather resistance is a big deal. When it comes to moisture resistance, both composite and PVC options perform very well. This is especially great if you wish to install a pool or hot tub near your deck. However, if you live in an area with extreme weather, PVC can expand and contract much more than composite materials. This may be a problem if you live somewhere where it gets very hot, but in most climates, PVC can stand up to the elements just as well as composite can.

What About Sustainability?

The two materials are both sought after as a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly option, but which one stacks up better? While composite decking is still a fantastic option, PVC takes the cake in this regard. Plastic decking is 100% recyclable which is a big deal for many homeowners these days. It’s all about weighing the pros and cons of each and choosing which material works best for you and your family.
