4 Tips to Help You Prepare Your Deck for Spring

4 Tips to Help You Prepare Your Deck for Spring

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to get your deck into shape.

Is your deck spring-ready? Weather in the Eastern Shore has had its ups and downs. However, consistent, warm weather is coming, and people will be excited to sit on their decks and relax. “Spring cleaning” applies to outdoor living spaces too, and now is the perfect time to get your deck into shape. If you’d like to learn how to prepare your deck for spring, here are four tips.

Cleaning the Deck

Maintenance starts with a thorough wash. Grab a durable broom and get between the boards as best you can. Then, remove all traces of dirt, dust, and debris. Once sweeping is over, use a brush with a long handle and a cleaning solution to clean off your deck. Repeat this process one more time if there are places with hard-to-remove grime. We suggest that you not use bleach to clean, as it can discolor particular sections.

Staining and Sealing

Once the area is dry, next apply a protective stain. A stain will protect a wooden deck from harsh UV rays that degrade wood. This process also makes the deck look more pleasant and inviting. You can even stain the material with different colors to give your outdoor living space a new look. Even if staining doesn’t happen regularly, it would be best to apply a sealant regularly. A sealant also protects against UV rays and ensures that the wood won’t dry out or crack. If the sun faces your yard, applying a sealant every three years will aid in preserving the wood.

Make Upgrades

A deck might call for aesthetic and functional upgrades now and then. For example, solar deck lights are trendy and offer safety and security for nighttime gatherings. Also, you can add additional shade to your outdoor area by adding a pergola or cantilever umbrella. A deck heater or fire pit can also provide an excellent heat source for those still-cold spring days or cooler fall days.

Deck Replacement

If harsh winter weather affects your deck, leaving it damaged, a replacement might be necessary. Signs of damage include wood rot, mold, soft areas, discoloration, and mold.
