How to Power Wash Your Deck

Power Wash

You may want to take the time to power wash your deck before the weather gets too cold. Here’s how you can do it.

Your deck is a marvelous space for you and your loved ones to gather around and enjoy the outdoors. Whether it be for dining or entertainment, a deck is a wonderful place to spend time, especially while hosting. With so much time hopefully being spent on your deck, you will need to make sure it is being properly taken care of. The more it is being used, the more cleaning and maintenance it may require. Especially in the fall and winter, your deck is likely to take a beating from the changing of the seasons and get a tad dirtied. As a result, it may be time for you to consider giving your deck a good, strong cleaning with a power wash to revitalize its appearance. However, before you go out and rent a power washer for your deck, there are a few things you should take into consideration if you are new to power washing.

The Power Part

The name “power washer” is not simply given for flash, but for substance as well. What is meant by that is that a power washer packs a tremendous amount of force, meaning that you need to be careful and keep that in mind while using it. If a power washer is used improperly, it has the potential of actually doing damage to your deck. That is why it is important the nozzle does not get too close to your deck, and that you are a good few feet away from it. Also, for safety reasons, you will want to mind where you point the nozzle of the power washer or else it could damage other parts of your property, or even your neighbors. You also need to make sure it is never used on any people or animals as it can be extremely harmful.

Test Runs

A power washer has different settings and configurations that are appropriate for specific situations, so you will need to find out what is perfect for you and your deck. Before you begin power washing your deck, set your power washer to the lowest level and see how it works on a small area of your deck. Slowly raise the pressure until you have found a level you are happy with for your deck. There are also different types of nozzles for you to choose from, but for decks, you will usually want to use a wider one.

Wooden Decks

Additionally, if you have a wooden deck, you will want to remember the fact that wooden decks are very easily damaged by a power washer. If you do not have a power washer, you do not need to worry about renting or buying one for cleaning your wooden deck as it is not completely necessary and may ruin your finish. If you want to though, you can use one on your wooden deck but just need to make sure it is on its lowest setting simply to rinse your deck.
